Located 90 km South West from Sudbury, Ontario you will find majestic and beautiful Killarney Provincial Park. The park is over 600 square km in size and has more than 50 lakes, many connected by rivers, which makes the park an ideal spot to plan a canoe trip.
The area became a provincial park after members of the Group of Seven, world famous painters from the 20th century, convinced the provincial government to do so because of its extreme beauty and La Cloche Mountain Range.
Killarney Provincial Park – A Destination To Remember
Whether you set out for a short three day canoe trip or a more adventurous ten day one, Killarney Provincial Park will be a destination you will always remember. The exceptionally clear lakes are a joy to paddle through and are great for swimming. The portages are clearly marked and the trails are well maintained. By planning ahead and booking your campsites, you can choose to either get an early start every day or sleep in and arrive at your site later in the day, knowing that your next site is reserved so you will never have to push on to the next lake to find a spot to pitch your tent for the night.
The most famous lakes of Killarney are Nellie Lake, which has 25 meters depth visibility and OSA Lake (named for Ontario Society of Artists). Acid Lake is very remote but is well known for its name, because of the acid rain which fell in the area prior to increased standards for clean air emissions. Even on the windiest days, the lakes in Killarney Provincial Park are easy to navigate in a canoe. For the more adventurous paddlers, a route can be planned which includes a day or two out of the park, heading out to Bay Fin on the Northern tip Lake Huron. You may encounter larger vessels such as yachts on this stretch of your trip but the challenge of canoeing in the bay is one you will be proud of upon completion of your trip.
When you plan your next canoe trip, make Killarney Provincial Park your next destination. You will love the lakes, mountain range, wild life and trees this unique area has to offer.
